This Week in Talent (29 November 2024)

Greetings from your final TWIT editor for 2024

Hello, team! I’m thrilled to be your editor for This Week in Talent —a month that’s always a race to the finish line for many teams, filled with reflection, planning, festivities, and celebrations. (Christmas is definitely my favourite time of year!) I’m excited to share my insights and reflections from a People and Culture perspective, along with what to watch for in 2025.

A Bit About Me

I’m the Chief People Officer (CPO) at Globird Energy. At Globird, customer-centricity is the cornerstone of our company culture—what we call our DNA. Living out our DNA helps us succeed as a business, delivering a red-carpet experience to both our customers and our people. I get my “energy” (see what I did there?) from helping make this happen.

Outside of work, I’m a busy mum of two. My husband and I spend most weekends navigating our kids’ packed social calendars and sports commitments.

GloHack24: Globird Energy’s First Hackathon

That’s right—this week, I want to spotlight our very first hackathon for the Globird Technology team. Technology is pivotal to the energy transition, and Globird is leading the way with innovative products and services that enhance the customer experience.

What is a Hackathon?

A hackathon is an event where teams collaborate intensively over a short period to develop and prototype creative ideas—think Shark Tank with an engineering twist.

At Globird, our hackathon encouraged innovation and creativity, leading to the development of exciting new products.

Fun fact: many of Facebook’s most popular features, such as the Like button, Chat, and even the Timeline, were conceived during hackathons.

Key Takeaway for Your Team

Set aside time for “out-of-the-box” ideas. Yes, the demands of business-as-usual (BAU) work often get in the way, but those left-field ideas you haven’t yet explored could become some of your most successful projects in the long term.

By giving your team the space to experiment and test new concepts, you’ll foster engagement and help develop talent internally. Stay tuned for next week’s edition, where I’ll dive deeper into this topic.

Right now, there is a lot of change in recruitment. New tools are arriving fast. AI is already part of our world. But I believe one thing stays true. Great recruitment still comes down to people. It comes down to how we listen, how we ask, how we plan and how we show up.
When people ask me why I love my job, the answer is simple and not surprising: Impact. The impact we have on people’s lives, on businesses, on communities and on ourselves. In the world of HR, few roles offer the unique blend of strategy, creativity, and human connection that Talent Acquisition does.
To unlock the full potential of your TA team, it’s essential to create engaging, meaningful work that not only motivates but also empowers them to thrive. Here’s some ideas so you can transform your TA function into a strategic powerhouse.
