As we kick off a new month, I’m excited to dip my pen in the figurative TWIT ink.
Last month we had the ITA’s, where we came together to celebrate our industry’s achievements. This month, the excitement continues with ATC2024, a fantastic opportunity to learn from peers in TA over two full days of insights and inspiration. Only 10 days to go until we’re at Fed Square together!
This brings me to what I want to share with you this month – career development in Talent Acquisition. Whether you have access to large development budgets or need to work with limited resources, TWIT is for you this month and will focus on practical and budget-friendly ways to advance your career.

Career Conversations
To start us off – Make sure you are having regular career conversations with your manager. Career conversations with my teams over the years have led to members of my team shadow or be seconded to ER, HR Ops, HR Systems and HR. It’s a fantastic way to learn new skills and see the broader processes in action.
Making the shift to Talent Advisory
If you’re wondering whether you’re acting as a Talent Advisor or still in a “Recruiter” phase, here’s a really helpful resource: Recruiting Toolbox. It’s packed with a diagnostic tool, best practice articles, videos, and podcasts so will suit different learning styles. This is great for individual contributors or leaders to start reflecting on how to position yourself and the function
Whether you’re navigating your first step in TA or planning your next big career move, focusing on Talent Advisory is key. By understanding business needs and positioning yourself as a strategic partner, you can make a meaningful impact on your team and organisation. But critical to that, is understanding the market you are operating in and having people to bounce ideas off – no matter what level of your career you are at.

Developing your skills in TA through TA projects
A great way to broaden your skill set is to get involved in TA projects. A good way to identify areas where work is needed is to review existing data; Onboarding, Engagement, and Exit surveys; Glassdoor, Indeed and Seek candidate/employee feedback or have a conversation with your TA and/or HR leadership teams.
If you can’t think of a project off the bat, this is quite the list of TA projects – just make sure you’ve had a conversation with your manager first to make sure you don’t go down a rabbit hole unnecessarily or duplicate current efforts.

We are so fortunate that there are always opportunities to learn in our industry – whether it’s events targeted at internal functions, local Talent MeetUps – there’s more than you can poke a stick at. And all of that is in addition to podcasts and online research. Find inspiration where you can.
