Hello fellow TWITs,
I spent a couple of days working in Airleys Inlet on the Great Ocean Road. It was a privilege to be on the lands of the Eastern Maar and Wadawurrung Peoples who are the custodians of the lands and waters encompassed by the Great Ocean Road region and have been for millennia.
I was there with one of my business partners, Lilian Kikuvi and we spent time on a DEI project, working on our business plans, finalising our end of year finances and running a storytelling masterclass for a pride network. Having flexibility in when, where, and how I work is a gamechanger for the mood, magic, and the mind.
Speaking of change, you may already know that Telstra has confirmed it will reduce up to 10 percent of its 31,000-strong workforce. Some 377 jobs will go immediately, with a total of 2,800 jobs gone by the end of December.
We should consider how TA teams play their part during restructures. Is offering outplacement and having basic redeployment practices in place enough in today’s economy? We’ve seen proactive campaigns from the likes of Linktree, Atlassian and Mr Yum, including actions such as sharing lists (airtable etc) with consent from people impacted, to open source a list of talent, and leveraging its extensive org and personal networks within the industry to facilitate introductions and job referrals for impacted employees.
By connecting former employees with potential employers, these organisations help to expedite the job search process and open new career opportunities while aiming to reduce brand damage.
I’m not sure what Telstra are planning but the exit experience doesn’t always get the attention it deserves. They have a chance to be pioneers in how they exit these people, reduce harm and leave a positive impression.
What caught my attention this week
Did you know that an AI-powered productivity app for creatives, co-founded by will.i.am and tech founder Sunil Reddy (FYI Focus Your Ideas), has announced a partnership with internXL? The partnership aims to connect college talent, particularly from underrepresented communities, with career opportunities in the AI and prompt engineering industry.
It made me curious; how could talent and AI partnerships like this support DEI outcomes?

It looks like farmers might face spending more time and money on recruitment.
In its budget last month, the government announced the end of the Harvest Trail Services and Harvest Trail Information Service on June 30. These free services connected farmers with temporary working visa holders (backpackers) and Australian jobseekers during busy harvest periods on the “harvest trail”, which comprises thousands of fruit, vegetable, grain, and wine grape farms throughout every state and territory.
As part of the services, contractors conducted background checks on both parties. Do you think the Government has considered the skills required to directly source talent as busy business owners?
