#10. Flexible working? It’s always been a matter of time.
Throughout the year we’ve seen plenty of companies jump on the bandwagon demanding employees return to the office. But even before Covid and Lockdowns, Australians have always valued work-life balance. So if you’re looking to entice employees back into the office, Paul Zauch says you need to stop talking about “workplace culture” and start focussing on how you will deliver a return on your employees’ time investment. After all, time is one of the most precious resources we have.
#9. Transforming to a skills-based organisation
Skills has certainly become the hot topic of 2023. As we move away from an era of “traditional jobs” and into the new, skills-based world of work, organisations are facing the fact that they need to re-engineer how they attract, retain, and manage talent. But companies need to adjust their thinking and approach old problems with new mindsets if they want to take advantage of the skills workforce model. Beamery’s Matt Collins and Grab’s Head of Employer Brand Claudine Shacklock think it’s time for things to change.
#8. Are we asking hiring managers the right questions?
Admit it – we’ve all had experiences working with “tricky” hiring managers before. But how much of this difficulty can we attribute to our own poor communication? Earlier in the year, Jess Gibson-Jones reflected on the type of questions we’re asking hiring managers – and the fact that they’re often not the right questions. If we want better answers, we need to start asking better questions. So, we reached out to the talent community to find out the best out-of-the-box questions to ask hiring managers when briefing a role. (Bonus article: Check our Stefan Welack’s How to communicate better with hiring managers.)
#7. Unicorns and Red Flags: The Questions You Need to Ask Before Joining a Start-up
If you’re looking towards new horizons in 2024, you may be considering joining a start-up and coming in at the ground level build out their hiring capacity. It can be a great opportunity, but it isn’t without risk; you either win big or lose it all if the company doesn’t succeed. Drawing on her own experiences, Pavi Iyer lays out the questions you need to ask to evaluate whether the start-up you’re looking at joining is the right option for you.
#6. Understanding the challenges of high volume hiring to achieve the trifecta of speed, cost, and quality.
Have you ever thought of how your candidate experience may impact on your organisation’s broader customer experience? This is one of the many unique challenges that high-volume recruiters consider regularly and highlights how their challenges differ greatly from those of single-hire recruiters. To optimise and make our recruitment processes more efficient, cost-effective, and quick, we really need to understand the unique challenges of the volume recruitment space. Here’s what High Volume Talent Leaders from CommBank (Jenn Cowland) and Optus (Alissa Patoulios) identify as their key challenges.
#5. Embracing Change: My Journey through Redundancy and the Pursuit of New Horizons
For many in the talent space, 2023 hasn’t been an easy year. Nandita Kohli was one of the unlucky ones who had her position made redundant, eliciting a roller coaster of emotions. In personal reflection, Nandita Kohli shares how she processed this monumental change in her life, how she navigated the changes of redundancy while searching for new professional opportunities and silver linings.
#4 Employer Brand tips for Small Talent Teams
A strong employer brand is critical to attracting strong talent, but many functions don’t have the luxury of a dedicated EB resource. So we asked employer brand strategists and experts from some of Australia’s leading organisations – including CommBank, Bupa, and RMIT – for their best employer brand tips that can really move the dial. They had some great advice on how smaller Talent Teams can drive big impact with their EVP.
#3 Be an upstander, not a bystander
In a LinkedIn post earlier this year, Simone Sexton, Inclusion Specialist at Bendigo & Adelaide Bank, reminded us that “knowing how to respond, be an ally, and call out racism is part of eliminating racism and building reconciliation. So what does it take to be an upstander? Our very own Jo Vohland has some tips.
#2 Talent Teams, it’s time to get to know your C-Suite
If you joined us at either our Talent Advisory event or ATC2023 this year you may have heard Nicola Harrison deliver this presentation in person, and boy, does it pack a punch. Looking to get more investment into your talent team next year? Start focussing on your C-Suite and understand how to effectively communicate with them. After all, they’re the ones who decide where the money will go.
#1 Revolutionising Talent Acquisition with ChatGPT and GPT-3: A Recruiter’s Perspective
Remember February 2023, when a fun new thing called ‘ChatGPT’ burst onto the scenes, and aside from using it to write funny poems no-one really understood it’s full power? Syed Imtiaz was one of the first people in the Australian recruitment space to really understand how we could harness ChatGPT’s full potential in the recruitment process and provided us with a detailed list of uses for the tool in Talent Acquisition. No wonder it was our most popular article of the year.
