This Week In Talent (22 Apr)

Note From The Editor

HOWDY HOOOOOOOO! What’s new for me this week? Well … let me tell you!

In the world of talent and recruitment … I’ve been struggling the last week or so, and I’m not the only one. Anyone else feeling a tad burnt out at the moment? It might be the change of season, or going into the office more (I’m back 3 days a week) … but far out I’m EXHAUSTED and it’s only Monday.

Last week I started reading the book Honeybee by Craig Silvey, and it is fantastic. The character development is great, and really had me hooked from chapter 1. The book’s main character is trans, and I’ve been reading reviews and articles about the book by people in the LGBTQ community stating that although it seems that Silvey has done a great deal of research into lived experiences of trans people … he’s not trans himself. I’ll finish the book and enjoy it for what it is, but I can’t stop thinking about this perspective here (FYI only read this last link if you’ve read the book because there’s a couple of spoilers).

A podcast that has been making me LOL recently on my afternoon walks with Eric (our greyhound) is The Becky and Cam Hotline. I’ve listened to this podcast for a while, and it used to just be Becky and Cam talking shit for an hour … but now they’ve turned it into an advice hotline where people can call in with their problems and I actually laugh out loud when they attempt to resolve them. If you don’t know Becky Lucas and Cameron James (the hosts) – they’re 2 Aussie comedians, and potentially 2 of my favourite people in the world.

Anyways, I hope everyone has an awesome week ahead! Don’t forget to connect with me on LinkedIn – I love making friends, and could always do with more 🙂

How a fast-growth Aussie business leader solved her hiring headaches

You may have seen this upcoming webinar event circulating around the traps on LinkedIn, and for good reason! Get yourself along on the 6th of May and hear how the powerhouse that is Travis Wright (Esther & Co) fixed all of her hiring woes so she could focus on nailing life and her rapidly growing bizz.

Back to the office: Work from home vs. corporate reality

This article is a “devil’s advocate” take on the benefits of working from home. Are you someone who is actually desperate to get back into the office full time, and hated working from home during lockdown? Have you thought about the possibility that employers might change our salaries if we’re working from home?

A company values employee handbook that we’re not too sure about …

JoVo actually tagged me in this on LinkedIn, and I thought this was worth a share. A burger joint in London has decided to shake up their employee handbook … but have they gone too far? I reckon this has discrimination case all over it, and would get a few people off side. I like the idea behind it, but the execution doesn’t work.

How to Make Small Talk After We’ve Been Through… a Pandemic

Hey, I know that we’re pretty much back to total normalcy now here in Australia, but is anyone else still struggling with socialising and making conversation? Or is that just me? This article helped me … also it contains the phrase “opinions are like assholes: everyone’s got one” so it’s worth a read just for that.

Have You Heard Of Servant Leadership?

Are you a leader that puts others first and makes sacrifices so your team can succeed? Then you might be displaying “servant leadership”. I never would have described my own leadership style in this category, but now that I’ve read the characteristics … I think it’s meeeeee! Apparently Mother Theresa uses a servant leadership style, and we are very similar so it must be true.

Nine Small Actions Business Leaders Can Take To Ensure Diversity In Hiring

I know I know I knoooowwww I share DEI articles all the time, but this one is GREAT! Not as good as Bree Gorman’s article was … but it’s up there. It has some really great, tangible tips that you can implement pretty easily to improve your recruitment diversity practices.

Thinking of hiring in APAC? Forget one-size-fits-all. From China to Vietnam, Singapore to Japan, every market moves to its own beat - culturally, economically, and legally. What worked yesterday won’t work today, and what works here might fail there. Talent pools shift, policies tighten, and candidates’ priorities evolve faster than most playbooks can keep up. Dive in to uncover the realities, myths, and strategies that actually work when expanding across East Asia - warts, wins, and all.
TA leaders often fight for credibility despite driving revenue through strategic hiring. This is my take on how to quantify TA's business impact, shift from order-taker to advisor, and build data-driven operations, calculate hiring ROI, optimise budgets, and position TA as a profit centre - not just overhead.
Too often 'Agile' means 'we have no deadlines or planning', 'we react to every whim', 'need for speed, quality is secondary'. In fact, any mess can be justified as an 'Agile approach', and if you dare ask for structure or sanity, you risk being labelled 'rigid'. The Agile Manifesto, born when developers, sick of siloed work, realised the only way to satisfy customers was through collaboration. With geographical expansion, demand surges and spikes, high volume of niche roles and business pressures to keep productivity up and cost per hire down came some big changes. Working just in your locale with occasional 'support' from others was not an option anymore. Before adopting Agile, we had to embody its core principle: being agile - able to move quickly and easily. When role surges hit, we assembled cross-border project teams (TA Leads, Ops, Sourcers, Marketing).
