This Week in Talent (4th November)

TWITBy Lucy EldredNovember 3, 2021Leave a comment

Hi there, We had a short week this week thanks to a public holiday on Tuesday for the Melbourne Cup. I live in a staunch anti-racing household, so we don’t “celebrate” the Melbourne Cup. So instead I used the day off to start putting together this week’s TWIT article. Whoop! I’ve been immersed in the…

2024 Innovation Lab: Talent Tech Pitch Off

Hi there,

Jody Smith
Jody Smith

SO WHO HAS WATCHED SQUID GAME?! I took Monday off this week and spent the WHOLE day watching the entire season of Squid Game. It was amazing. If you haven’t watched it yet – definitely do. Best watched on the Korean language setting (the original) and using subtitles. Nothing worse than English dubbed tv shows/movies.

Anyway – how is everyone in the talent world right now? What are you focusing on this week?

I’ve honestly just been head down, bum up this past week – trying to make it to the end of lockdown and get through the mountains of work we currently have on. I haven’t done anything exciting in the talent space this past week as we rush to find talent, and employ them in the jobs we have available. I’m hoping to take a step back slightly, and really look at some new process improvement projects to kick off but that all tends to take a backseat when there’s a million vacancies to fill.

The legend that is Jo Vo shared this article with the ATC team last week that she received as part of Amantha Imber’s newsletter. It honestly was a great read about email etiquette and tips if you have an exploding email inbox. Some timely reminders in there for me and things the resonated – like point #20 “Emails are a terrible place for small talk”. SO SO true and a massive pet peeve of mine.

Anyways that’s it from me this week – hope y’all have a good one!

‘Fortress Australia’: Closed borders aggravate tech talent shortage

Eeeeeek – hands up if you’ve been struggling to fill roles because of the interstate and international border closures? (I’m imagining everyone raising their hands right now). Looks like some of the larger tech companies are also feeling it big time.

LinkedIn has named the 25 hottest new startups in Australia winning the war on talent

Looks like startups are the way to go at the moment – attracting people that are keen to try something new and advance their careers quickly. Perhaps working for a larger, more established organisation isn’t as attractive as it used to be?

Great source of DO’s and DON’Ts when designing for all

A bunch of really useful and actionable tips for anyone wanting to improve their reach to diverse audiences when creating content (which I hope is EVERYBODY).

Pandemic could prompt reassessment of alcohol’s role at work

This has been on my mind lately, because I definitely have been using alcohol as a way to unwind throughout the last 2 years of lockdown. I’ve been actively trying to cut back, because although it is a temporary relaxer it ultimately makes me more anxious in the long run. A good read for those rethinking their relationship with alcohol in the workplace.

Freelancers to ‘substantially’ replace full-time staff in the next five years

It’s happening – how will your organisation make it work, and incorporate freelancers into your workforce planning strategies?

Bosses turn to ‘tattleware’ to keep tabs on employees working from home

I mean … using surveillance platforms to remotely monitor your staff is gross and makes me anxious just thinking about it. On another note though – how funny is calling it “Tattleware”? LOL cute.

Local hiring challenges set to soar in 2022 and 2023

Articles like this scare me – as if we’re not having a tough enough time as it is! Time to start thinking further outside the box at how we find, attract and retain talent.
