Day 1: 12th September, 20178:45 am - 9:15 amKeynote Session - Automation and the Contingent Workforce
Kevin Wheeler - Future of Talent InstituteSummary:
Automation and the Contingent Workforce
Kevin will provide a broad and provocative overview of the future of work and jobs. One of the drivers of the future that has led to the growth in contingent work is the rise of artificial intelligence, machine learning, algorithms and automation. There is continuing uncertainty over what jobs will be automated and which ones will be augmented by these forces.
Using research from Oxford University as well as his own studies, Kevin will discuss which jobs are most likely to be automated, which jobs will be augmented and which jobs will continue to be performed by people. He will also discuss the limitations and potential dangers in automation.
The contingent workforce will need to develop new skills to remain useful and Kevin will talk about which skills are most likely to be needed and how workers might be able to acquire those skills without going back to school.

Suncorp & Hays: A State of Emergency MSP beginning
It’s 2011 and you’re leading the complete redesign of your Contingent Talent Function. Day 1 of the new MSP arrives and if the stakes aren’t high enough, a State of Emergency is declared – the Brisbane Floods have hit and there is a massive surge in demand for temporary staff. Suncorp’s vision is to be the destination for the moments that matter. The stakes were high all-round and the model tested to its limit on Day 1. For Stuart and Hays Talent Solutions this was certainly a Moment that Mattered. Well, they say deep bonds can be formed under intense conditions!
Stuart will share how the MSP model coped with its intense start and how six years later it has evolved into a Strategic Recruitment Partnership filling almost 3,000 roles, including the successes, the learnings and how it has recently expanded beyond our shores.

Diversity & Inclusion Panel
How can you use your non-permanent workforce to improve your total workforce diversity? Given that it is more agile than your permanent workforce it is easier to balance and optimise your workforce. The panel will look at this from an operational and legal perspective in terms of how you could readily achieve this and ensure that you comply with our EEO legislation. We will also look at the strategic implications to your total workforce.
Has non-permanent talent been fully integrated into an Organisation’s corporate culture? Are they eligible for all benefits that permanent talent enjoys? With Contingent workers making up over 30% of the workforce, isn’t it about time we brought them in from the cold? But does this affect their status as a Contingent Worker? Our panel discusses how you can incorporate compelling and humane practices without running the risk of changing their work status.

Inter-company secondments to empower sustainable company growth
The growth engine of the world’s economy has shifted from manufacturing to project based, people centric services businesses. As competition hots up in the sector, businesses are struggling to improve their margins to remain afloat. But what strategy do you use? People-centric organisations have a very high fixed labour cost so the two primary profitability levers are either lowering costs or increasing revenue. Up until now businesses have mostly focused on cutting costs applying a ‘more with less’ strategy to try and get ahead – but there is a better way. Tim Walmsley will take you through how to utilise inter-company secondments to increase your productivity, lower your overheads and empower your business to grow sustainably. He will walk you through the issues to consider and provide you with the model to achieve the flexibility of the gig economy while maintaining the stability of your company structure.

David Schmidtchen - EYSummary:
Why Government Needs Contingent Workers Today and in the Future
Contractors, consultants and service providers are pivotal to the achievement of government outcomes. Without a contingent workforce, government business would slow. Governments draw their contingent workforce from independent contractors in highly skilled occupations, such as ICT, health and professional services. Analysis of the Australian independent contractor workforce shows differences by occupation, industry and gender.
Understanding these dynamics and forecasts is critical for the public sector, and these factors are further complicated by the future of work with increased automation, digitisation and different working patterns. How does government maximise the utility of its contingent workforce today and in the future?
